Bathroom Shower Tile and Valve Replacement
A failed shower valve was feeding the wall behind the tile. We opened the wall, replaced the valve, rebuilt the substrate with proper waterproofing and re-tiled the surround.

The situation
The tenant had reported low shower pressure and a damp smell for weeks. The valve body had been leaking inside the wall, and the tile was set directly over drywall with no waterproofing — so the substrate had to come out entirely.
What we did
- Replaced the shower valve body and verified the supply lines under pressure
- Removed the existing tile and the failed substrate back to the framing
- Installed cement backer board in place of the original drywall
- Applied a roll-on waterproofing membrane, taping and sealing every seam and penetration
- Set the new tile from a dry-laid layout so full tiles land at the focal wall
- Grouted, applied 100% silicone at all changes of plane, and installed a new glass door
The result
A shower that was leaking into the wall is now waterproofed to current standard, and the bathroom reads as a full remodel rather than a repair. It is also the last time that wall should need to be opened.
